A move is much easier when there is a plan before boxes start piling up. Whether you are moving across Eau Claire, relocating within the Chippewa Valley, or leaving Wisconsin, the same basic checklist applies. An organized moving team can help keep the process on track, but the best results start with preparation.
Eight Weeks Before Your Move
Start by confirming your move date. If you have a lease end date, closing date, or move-in deadline, build everything else around that. If your dates are flexible, look for lower-demand windows. Midweek moves and off-peak months in early spring or fall usually give you more scheduling options.
This is also the right time to book your moving company. Eau Claire movers can fill up quickly, especially in summer and at the end of the month. Try to book four to eight weeks ahead when possible.
Ask for a flat-rate estimate based on an in-person or video walkthrough. A price given over the phone without seeing the home is not something you can rely on.
Begin decluttering now. Basements, garages, attics, storage closets, and spare rooms are good places to start. Every item you sell, donate, or throw away is one less thing to move.
If you have specialty items such as a piano, gun safe, pool table, riding mower, or oversized furniture, mention them during the estimate. Not every mover is equipped to handle them.
Six Weeks Before Your Move
Start gathering packing supplies. You will need boxes in different sizes, tape, packing paper, bubble wrap, and markers. If you are using packing services, decide what the movers will pack and what you want to handle yourself.
Begin packing non-essential items. Seasonal clothing, books, decor, extra linens, and items from storage can usually be boxed early. Label every box with the room it belongs to and a short description of what is inside.
Start making your address-change list. Include your employer, bank, insurance providers, subscriptions, medical offices, and any government agencies. You can also submit your USPS mail forwarding request during this stage.
Plan for children and pets on moving day. Having them out of the main work path keeps everyone safer and makes the day less stressful.
Four Weeks Before Your Move
Check in with your moving company and confirm the details. If anything has changed since your estimate, such as more boxes, added furniture, or a storage stop, mention it now.
If you are moving into or out of an apartment building in Eau Claire, confirm elevator reservations, truck parking, building access rules, and move-in windows. These details can slow the crew down if they are left until the last minute.
Start using up food from your pantry and freezer. Frozen items and open food are difficult to move. For nonperishable items you do not want to take, ask whether donation pickup is available. Daymakers partners with Move for Hunger to help get eligible nonperishable donations to local food banks.
Two Weeks Before Your Move
Disassemble what you can safely handle in advance. Bed frames, table legs, shelving units, and sectional pieces can often be taken apart before moving day. This saves time once the crew arrives.
Finish your labeling system. Label at least two sides of every box, not just the top. Boxes get stacked, and top-only labels disappear fast.
Pack an essentials bag for the first 24 to 48 hours in the new place. Include medications, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, basic cleaning supplies, and anything else you will need right away. Keep this bag with you, not on the truck.
One Week Before Your Move
Clear walking paths through every room. The crew should be able to move furniture and boxes without stepping over clutter. Check closets, cabinets, the garage, attic, basement, and outdoor storage areas so nothing gets missed.
Confirm parking for the moving truck. If space needs to be reserved, handle that now. Some Eau Claire neighborhoods or buildings may have parking rules, so it is better to check early.
Defrost your refrigerator and freezer at least 24 hours before the move. Wipe them dry before the crew arrives.
Moving Day
When the Daymakers crew arrives, they will introduce themselves, walk you through the plan, and confirm any items that require special handling. This is the time to point out fragile pieces, storage items, or anything that should not go on the truck.
Stay available for questions, but keep children and pets away from the working path. At the new home, direct furniture placement so the crew can put items where they belong instead of stacking everything in one room.
Before the crew leaves, do a final walkthrough at both locations. Make sure nothing was left behind and that major furniture is placed correctly.
After Your Move
Unpack by priority. Start with the bedrooms and bathrooms, then the kitchen, and finally the rest of the home. Try to finish one room before moving to the next.
As you unpack, check for damage and take photos if anything needs reporting. Finish your address updates, including voter registration, vehicle registration if needed, insurance, banks, medical providers, and subscriptions.
Daymakers follows up after every move to confirm the experience matched the estimate and that the final invoice aligned with the original quote.
