Hiring a reputable moving company for packing services can take a lot of pressure off your move. Still, many Lake Elmo customers are not sure what the day itself will look like. The process is usually straightforward: the crew arrives with materials, works room by room, carefully packs and labels everything, and leaves the home ready for loading.
Here is what to expect before, during, and after packing day.
What Happens Before Packing Day
Packing day really starts during the estimate walkthrough. Before the crew arrives, we review your home either in person or by live video. We look at each room, identify fragile items, note anything that needs special handling, and talk through what should and should not be packed.
This is the time to point out sentimental pieces, artwork, glassware, electronics, or anything you want handled a certain way. The crew uses that information to prepare for the job before they arrive.
That means packing day is not improvised. The plan is already built around your home and your belongings.
When the Crew Arrives
The crew arrives at the scheduled time with the materials needed for the job. That includes boxes in various sizes, packing paper, bubble wrap, tape, cushioning materials, wardrobe boxes, and specialty boxes for mirrors or artwork, as needed.
You do not need to buy packing supplies in advance unless you want to pack certain items yourself.
After a quick walkthrough, the crew usually divides the work by room. This keeps the process organized and prevents items from different rooms from being mixed.
How Different Items Get Packed
Not everything is packed the same way. Dishes are wrapped individually and placed carefully in boxes. Glassware is cushioned to prevent shifting. Books go into smaller boxes, so they stay manageable to carry.
Hanging clothes may be placed in the wardrobe boxes. Some clothing can stay in dresser drawers if that makes sense for the move. Artwork, mirrors, and flat-screen TVs get extra protection, and larger, fragile pieces may need custom boxes.
Furniture that is not boxed is wrapped with moving pads and plastic wrap before loading. The goal is simple: everything should be protected for the way it will travel.
Labeling and Organization
As boxes are packed, they are labeled by destination room. Some boxes may also include a short contents description, such as “kitchen glassware” or “primary bedroom linens.”
This step matters more than people realize. Clear labels help the unloading crew place boxes in the right rooms at the new home. They also make unpacking much easier.
If storage is part of the move, labeling also helps connect the packed items to the inventory system.
What You Should Do While the Crew Is Packing
You do not need to pack alongside the crew, but you should be available. Questions may come up about whether something is going, staying, or being handled separately.
Before the crew arrives, set aside anything you plan to move yourself. This usually includes medications, important documents, jewelry, valuables, chargers, keys, and anything you will need before the truck is unloaded.
Put those items in a clearly marked area, or keep them with you. That prevents something important from being mistakenly sealed into a box.
How Long Does Packing Day Take
Packing time depends on the size of the home and the number of belongings. A two-bedroom apartment may be packed much faster than a four-bedroom house with a basement, garage, and many fragile items.
The estimate walkthrough gives us a realistic idea of timing before the day arrives. That way, you don’t have to guess how long the crew will be there.
Specialty packing, large kitchens, collections, artwork, and storage-heavy rooms usually add time.
What Comes After Packing Day
If packing and moving are done on separate days, the home will be ready when the loading crew arrives. Boxes are packed, labeled, and organized. Furniture is wrapped or ready to be wrapped before loading.
If packing and loading happen on the same day, the crew works through the home in stages. As rooms are completed, packed items can move toward loading.
At the new home, unpacking services can continue the process. Boxes go to the correct rooms, items are unpacked where needed, and the home becomes usable faster.
