Moving and storage covers more ground than most people expect. The service you need depends less on the size of your home than on how your dates line up. A family crossing St. Croix County, a business clearing an office, and a homeowner with six weeks between closings are three different jobs. We are Daymakers Moving & Storage, a moving and storage company in Hudson, WI, working both sides of the Wisconsin and Minnesota border since 2015.
Every quote we give starts with an in-person or live video walkthrough, never a number over the phone. The walkthrough is what catches the piano on the second floor. Below is what each service covers, so you can tell the estimator what you need instead of guessing.
Which Service Fits Your Situation?
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
Most people call us already knowing they need movers, but not knowing which service that means. The quickest way to sort it is by what is driving the date rather than by what is in the house.
- Dates line up, and the move stays inside the county. Local moving, usually billed against crew size and hours on site.
- Dates line up, but the move crosses a state line. Long-distance moving, priced on weight and distance.
- Dates do not line up. Moving plus storage, with one company holding your belongings in between.
- Someone else sets the date. Senior moves tied to a facility move-in, or commercial moves tied to a lease.
- One item is the whole job. A piano, a gun safe, a heavy safe, or a single-item pickup.
- The date is now. Same-day moving, subject to what is open on the schedule.
Local Moves Across Hudson and St. Croix County
A local move covers anything inside Hudson and the surrounding St. Croix County area, including runs out to River Falls, North Hudson, New Richmond, Baldwin, and Somerset. Apartment moves inside a single building count too, and those are often the ones people assume are too small to bother booking.
Loading, transport, and unloading are the core of the job, and packing or unpacking attach to it when you want them. Local work is usually billed against crew size and hours on site, so the variables that move the price are the ones that eat time: stairs, elevator waits, carry distance from the truck, and how much is still unpacked when we arrive. How local moving hours are calculated goes through each of those in order.
Ask any mover you are considering whether drive time from their yard sits on the clock. The answer varies by company, and it belongs in the estimate conversation rather than in a surprise on the final invoice.
Long-Distance and Cross-Border Moves
The Hudson to Twin Cities corridor is the route we run most, which puts Minneapolis, St. Paul, Stillwater, and Lake Elmo on the board constantly. We also handle moves across Wisconsin and nationwide. We are FMCSA-registered for interstate work, so crossing into Minnesota is routine for us rather than a referral to somebody else.
Pricing works differently from a local job. Weight and distance set the number instead of hours on site, which is why a pre-move sort pays for itself. Every item you decide not to take comes off the shipment weight before the estimator ever writes it down.
.Ask whether your estimate is binding or non-binding and get the answer in writing. A binding estimate holds the price for the agreed scope. A non-binding one is a projection that can move at delivery. Preparing for a long-distance move walks through the booking sequence in more detail.
Packing, Unpacking, and Specialty Items
Packing is the part most people underestimate, and it is the part that decides whether things arrive intact. Our crew wraps, pads, and boxes what needs it, including fragile, high-value, and awkwardly shaped pieces that do not fit a standard carton.
Partial packing is the middle option, and the one most households land on. You handle the books and the linens. We handle the china, the artwork, the electronics, and anything that needs a custom wrap. Unpacking at the destination is booked separately, and it earns its keep if you are moving with small children, on a deadline, or helping a parent settle in.
Pianos, gun safes, and heavy safes need their own assessment before moving day. These are not add-ons to sort out on arrival. Tell the estimator about them during the walkthrough, and the right crew size and equipment get assigned from the start. The same applies to large artwork, antiques, and medical or specialty equipment.
That is usually enough to book a walkthrough. Tell us the rooms, the dates, and anything heavy, and we will come see the rest in person or over live video.
Storage Between Move-Out and Move-In
The gap between closing dates is the most common reason customers here end up needing storage, and it is rarely planned for. Our climate-controlled storage facility in Hudson provides humidity control, dust suppression, pest management, and around-the-clock security monitoring.
Climate control matters here more than it would somewhere milder. A Wisconsin winter and a humid Wisconsin July both work on wood furniture, electronics, upholstery, and paper, and the damage shows up gradually rather than all at once. Anything sitting through either season is better off in a temperature-stable unit.
Short-term and long-term both work. We can load from your house straight into storage and deliver to the new address once it is ready, which keeps the whole chain inside one company instead of two. Commercial customers use the same facility when they are clearing space for a renovation or sitting between leases.
Business, Senior, and Same-Day Moves
Three move types run on somebody else’s clock rather than yours, and they get scoped differently because of it.
Commercial and office moves usually run on an evening or a weekend so the business is working again by Monday. The estimate covers furniture, equipment, floor and dock access, and anything with an IT dependency. Warehouse jobs with shelving and palletized inventory get assessed on their own terms.
Senior moves run at a different pace on purpose. There is usually a third party involved, whether that is an adult child coordinating from another state or a facility with its own move-in window. Downsizing decisions take time and sentimental items require handling, and both are built into how we scope the job rather than absorbed on the day.
Same-day moving depends on what is open. We have picked up jobs for customers whose previous mover canceled on short notice, and that is a theme that comes up repeatedly in what customers tell us afterward. Availability is the only honest answer before you call.
How We Build the Estimate
Every price we give follows a walkthrough, either in person or over live video. There are no phone-only quotes, because a phone quote is a guess dressed up as a number.
The estimator goes room by room, notes volume and item type, flags specialty pieces, checks access at both addresses, and factors in whatever packing or unpacking you want attached. What comes back is a figure built on your house, not an average for houses that size.
Have a few things ready, and the estimate gets sharper. Know your dates, or at least your window. Know what is not coming with you. Say out loud whether there is a piano, a safe, or a staircase that gives furniture trouble. Mention any elevator or dock reservation either building requires.
