moving tips for seniors

Moving can be tough on anyone, but especially for seniors. We understand that, so the Daymakers team is ready to help you with whatever you need to make your move easy and stress-free. If you need some advice, read below to learn more about moving tips for seniors.

Prepare in Advance

If you’ve found a home and are ready to start the moving process, don’t want until a couple weeks before moving day to start packing and preparing. If you’re able to pack, set an hour or so aside every day to slowly start packing things that you won’t need. This will lessen the workload when the day gets closer. If you’re not comfortable or not able to pack on your own, let us know! We can do the packing for you.

Get a Floor Plan of Your New Spot

Getting a floor plan ahead of time will help you decipher if you can fit everything that you own and want to move with you. If you have a certain type of bed, big furniture, or any oddly shaped items, this will help you figure out where you can put it all. If you can’t fit some items, you’ll know ahead of time to get rid of them and shop for something that will fit much better.

Let Your Family Know

The first people that should know about your move is your family. You want to make sure that they know where you’re headed so they can help where they can, inform other family members, and make sure you adjust well.

Check Out Your New Community

Before you head to your new home, make sure you do your research on what is located around your home. Make sure there are doctors nearby, hospitals, or even businesses that support your hobbies. If you’re an avid movie theater-goer, check out the nearest movie theater! Need a specific doctor? Be sure to transfer all of your important documents to that new doctor. All of these steps will help you ease into your new place without added stress.

Get Repairs/Painting Done Ahead of Time

If your new home needs any repairs or a new coat of paint, be sure to hire someone to do that ahead of time so it’s ready for you when you move it. You don’t want to have to deal with moving into a home that isn’t fully ready for you yet. If this is done ahead of time, you’ll just have to worry about where you’re setting up your family photos, where the dog bowl is going, etc.

Pack a Suitcase of Essential Items

Right before moving day, it’s important to pack your essentials in a suitcase or some type of bag that you can carry with you. It’s difficult sometimes to find everything you need after moving into your new home, and if you have it on you – you’ll be a lot less stressed and the unpacking process will come much easier. For example, you should pack any medications you may need, glasses, an extra pair of clothing, etc.

Now that you have all of these tips under your belt, it’s time to look for a moving company that best fits your needs. Daymakers Moving & Storage can help you pack up, move, and unpack!
