When it comes to moving, timing matters. We’re not just talking about personal circumstances like coordinating your moving time with a job change or planning around school schedules—there are factors everyone should consider when choosing a day, week, month, or year to relocate. If you have a little flexibility, you can plan an easier, more affordable move with these well-timed tips from Daymakers Moving & Storage.

1. The Time of Day

For most people, moving day means an early start. Given the amount of work and level of excitement (and/or stress), sleeping in usually isn’t an option anyway. We’ll tackle the most challenging tasks first and work quickly so you’ll have time later in the day to start unpacking, organizing, and enjoying your new space. Need another reason to set an alarm? If you’re moving in summer, mornings won’t be so hot and sticky. Need just one reason to wait? A late afternoon or evening move can be more cost-effective due to lower demand, and you can still get a few hours in at work if you need to.

2. Day of Week

Try to stick to a weekday when setting up your moving date. Moving between Monday and Thursday is your best bet to avoid more expensive weekend rental and labor rates. You’re also likely to have less traffic (especially for a long-distance move) and better access to things like service elevators during a workday. It may not be the most fun or relaxing way to use a vacation day, but trust us, it’s worth it to save time, money, and stress.

3. Time of the Month

Moving in the middle of the month is a smart move. About one-third of Americans rent and a huge percentage of their leases start at the beginning or the end of the month. The second and third week are ideal for a more relaxed relocation experience with Daymakers.

4. Time of Year

Moving is challenging enough, without battling winter weather. That’s one reason over 60 percent of people move between May and September. Another reason is that families with children in school often move over the summer break to avoid disrupting their schedules. If you can plan ahead for a fall, winter, or early spring move, you’ll have lower costs and less competition for moving and packing services.
