Cleaning out your home before you move is a great first step. It’s important to only have to worry about the items you plan to move, rather than wasting space and time moving belongings you’re going to throw away. One of the best ways to clean out your home is to sell! These days, there are plenty of easy ways to do this – so, Daymakers wanted to help you out and compile a list of all of the available apps to help you sell things before you move.
Facebook Marketplace
Facebook Marketplace is a great tool to sell your things. You can set a specific radius to reach a certain area, and you can choose whether you want your items to be pick-up or shipping only. The great thing about this platform is that you can share your post with your Facebook friends and family, which allows even more people to see it. You’re also able to communicate with interested buyers, which makes the transaction super simple.
Listing Fees: Unlike other commerce platforms, you can list your belongings for free.
Seller Fees: If you sell items from a “shop” and use the marketplace checkout, Facebook charges 5% per shipment or $0.40 for items $8.00 or less.
Mercari
Think of Mercari as a better, smoother ebay. You can list your items and choose from specific brands, list the quality of the items, upload photos, and communicate with buyers. If you download the app, you can always stay in touch with your interested buyers as well as allow them to “follow” you.
When you sell an item, you have 1-4 days to ship the item – but don’t forget to check off “shipped” so the buyer knows it’s on the way! After the buyer receives the item and rates you, you get paid. If the buyer forgets to rate you, Mercari gives them a bit to complete that task and if they do not, they’ll send you the payment after that time.
Listing Fees:
- 0% listing fee
- A payment processing fee of 2.9% + $0.30 fee per sale is charged based on the completed sale price of the item.
- Each completed direct deposit of $10 or more to your bank account – 0% fee
- $2 fee for each direct deposit transfer under the minimum of $10
- $2 fee for each direct deposit transfer rejected by your financial institution and returned back to your Mercari balance
- $2 fee for each completed instant pay transfer
OfferUp
Local sales on this app are completely free, you can communicate with potential buyers, and meet up with them to make the exchange in person. Within the app, OfferUp has a number of designated “Community Meetup Spots.” These are brightly lit areas with video cameras, offering additional peace of mind for any concerned seller or buyer.
This app is not involved in the payment process for in-person transactions, so they recommend that users exchange cash rather than using checks, cards, payment apps, etc.
For sales that require shipping, they oversee the communication, payment, and shipping process entirely within the app.
Fees: OfferUp takes a service fee on these long-distance transactions (about 12.9% or $2 minimum) and payment is deposited into the seller’s account as soon as the item is delivered and the buyer confirms that they are satisfied.
Poshmark
If you have extra clothes, Poshmark is the best platform for that. Members follow one another’s virtual closets, sharing, liking, and commenting on items they find interesting or noteworthy.
To list an item, post at least one picture along with the information about the size, the brand, the quality, etc.
Fees:
- Poshmark’s cut of each purchase is roughly 20% or a flat rate of about $3 of sales less than $15.
- Buyers pay a flat rate of around $7.50 for expedited shipping
Nextdoor
Nextdoor is a great app to sell locally. Create an account for the neighborhood you live in and list the items you want to sell. You can either list them with a price or list them for free. Your fellow neighbors will get an alert and from here you can discuss where you want to make the transaction.
The great part about this app is, it’s completely free to list, sell, buy, and join!
Facebook Groups
Similar to Nextdoor, Facebook Groups are a great place to put your belongings into the public eye. If your town has its own group, join it and list your items. However, make sure sales are allowed.
You can post pictures, a description, a price, and whatever else you want. Communication is easy and you can determine if someone wants it shipped or to pick-up in person.
