Have you heard of a successful, smooth, stress-free moving experience? That may be hard to come by if your friends/family didn’t hire the right moving company. Lucky for you, if you’re reading this to get a feel for us to potentially use Daymakers as your moving company – you’ve come to the right place. Not only do we post blogs to try to answer any of your questions before you start the process but we also pride ourselves on creating a stress-free, successful move – every time. With that said, you may forget some things or wish to see a list of what to do before the movers arrive – here you go!
Purge your home
Go through all of your belongings and make piles and notes of things you do not need, do not want, and what you’re planning on keeping. This will keep things organized come moving day. If you’re able to remove the things that you don’t need prior to reaching out for an estimate, you’ll have a better idea of how much it’ll cost come moving day.
Create a list of the belongings you plan on moving yourself
Although Daymakers is always extremely careful when it comes to moving your belongings, we understand that some people feel more comfortable moving specific items on their own. For example, if you just got a brand new desktop computer, you may decide to safely pack that into your car for the trip. Creating this list prior to getting an estimate will also help give you a better idea of what the cost will look like.
Clean and organize
If you’re not using our packing services, make sure you have everything packed up and ready to go come moving day. Label each box with the room it belongs in and make sure they are in a spot that is easy to get to. Also, don’t forget to:
- Unplug, empty, and clean all electrical appliances (refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, etc.)
- Remove batteries from anything that would be transported in the truck
- Empty out your junk drawer – everyone has one of these – as well as other drawers around the house
- Drain your lawnmower, snow blower, leaf blower, or any other fuel tools you may have
- Take down shower curtains, pack up bath mats, outdoor mats, etc.
Pre-pack smaller, important items
Pre-packing smaller yet important items and putting them somewhere where you know you won’t forget is crucial. These items can be anything from passports, important files, and credit cards, to keyboards, your mouse, cameras, etc.
Before you move your things to your new home, remember to…
Before you have your movers pack up the furniture and large items, make sure they are going to be able to fit through the doors of your new home! If you can, head there before moving day and measure out each entrance to the house as well as each entrance to the rooms. This will give you an idea of what you can realistically bring and what you may need to part ways with OR put into storage… which, we have by the way.
Be mindful of the weather
If your moving day is calling for rain or snow, it’s important that you prepare for that. Prepare yourselves with the correct clothing, but also prepare the home you’re moving out of and the new one. Put down plastic or something to protect the floors/carpet from dirt and wetness and be mindful if you’re using the heat. We advise you to shut the heat off if you can, seeing as the doors will be open, leading to wasting heat and money. Keep an eye on that forecast!
